Week Two Recap: The Jets-Aaron Glenn Honeymoon Period is over, lose to Bills 30-10

With fans riding the momentum rush from the exciting performance from the offense in week one against the Steelers. Week two against the division rival, Buffalo Bills, seemed to be an early scale for how good this Jets team was going to be this season under new head coach Aaron Glenn. And that scale tipped over the edge in the worst way for the New York Jets merely after the first half. The quality of play was pitiful and disappointing. Is this hyperbole? No, simply because the Bills did not beat the Jets, Josh Allen did not beat the Jets, but the Jets beat the Jets. When the defense is committing empty-headed "roughing the passer" penalties on 3rd and 19 to reward the opposing side with a new set of downs on your end zone, you earn the criticism you receive. When the offense can't put together quality drives and can't move the ball forward, you earn the criticism you receive. These are just two factors that led to Sunday's loss and must be fixed if this team wants to win a game this season.

The game started with a third-and-out from the offense, immediately sobering fans from last week's incredible offensive performance. The Bills' passing offense seemed to struggle on the first two plays until Josh Allen broke it open with a 40-yard rush, which gave the Bills momentum. The Jets' defense forced an intentional grounding called against Allen and put themselves in a great position to avoid a Bills opening TD score with 3rd and 19 coming up. They forced a stop until Michael Clemons was called for a roughing the passer, and that opened the can of misery for the Jets, as the Bills capitalized with a touchdown, 7-0 Bills. On the ensuing drive, Jets QB Justin Fields fumbled the ball immediately, and the Bills responded with a field goal, 10-0 Bills. The game would continue to be more of the same, but the Jets finally scored a 51-yard field goal, and the score was 20-3 at the half in favor of the Bills. The second half opened with two scoring possessions from the Bills, making it 30-3, and Jets QB Justin Fields suffered a concussion, which welcomed Tyrod Taylor to come in as the Jets QB. He would muster up a four-minute drive leading to a first career touchdown for TE Jeremy Ruckert, 30-10 Bills, and the game would shortly end after.

Any lifelong Jets fan or anyone covering the Jets for the past decade would have expected this performance. If it had been anything else, like a competitive game, today wouldn't feel as glum because there would still be hope. However, the Jets continue to make the same mistakes as they did last season, despite having a new regime. Same penalties leading to game-changing scores, same lack of good play from the QB position, same simple mistakes that continue to add to the slander the Jets receive day in and day out. It has come to the point where, after only two games, people are already pointing the finger at the new head coach, Aaron Glenn. When in reality, it is the unequal distribution of talent. The Jets have big names on defense, but at the positions where those players don't play, we have players that may not even be starting in the league if they weren't on the Jets.

Has Coach Glenn's "Discipline Man" gimmick already gone dry? Yes, it definitely has with the media. But if he wants to make a change, Michael Clemons can't play on the following drive. He just can't. The Jets allowed a quarterback who has struggled against them throughout his career at MetLife Stadium to score 30 points, and the team committed seven penalties. However, it's too quick to call for the firing of a new head coach. It's brash and makes no sense when developing a young nucleus. However, I fully expect a new quarterback controversy to hit One Jets Drive with Tyrod Taylor seemingly taking the helm at QB while Justin Fields enters concussion protocol. How will the offense look? Fans have clamored to see Taylor for the past two seasons, and every single time he plays, he delivers a professional performance. Could he lead the Jets to an underdog win against Tampa Bay next week? And do you play Justin Fields after that, or will Jets head coach Aaron Glenn keep his word and play the players that give them the best chance to win? Or will we get blown out next week and these hypotheticals be deemed worthless? We will have to wait until next week.
