REPORT: Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Reached out to Jets on Micah Parsons Trade
Saturday afternoon, Jerry Jones appeared on ESPN New York Radio and revealed eyebrow-raising information regarding the trade talks held around the highly coveted, newly acquired Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons. Initially, Jerry Jones had preferred to trade Parsons to the AFC and was looking to acquire Jets star DT Quinnen Williams. There were talks held between the Cowboys and Jets, but they were shut down due to the Jets stating that they "didn't have the resources to entertain conversations." For Jones, it was a prerequisite for any team trying to trade for Parsons to have a "really, frankly significant dominant inside defensive player," and the Jets fit the criteria with Quinnen Williams being a three-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro, cementing himself as one of the best defensive players in the league. The Cowboys would've also wanted draft capital in return, and the Jets seemed adamant on not moving Williams or any draft picks.
Trading for Parsons is a move that playoff or championship contenders will make to secure a significant upgrade that could help them win a Super Bowl. Those teams could afford to mortgage their future and give away future draft picks. Still, the Jets seemingly don't envision themselves making a run at the gold right now. A move like this would be a blockbuster, but with all the draft capital that would be involved, it wouldn't ultimately benefit the team in the long term. Two first-round picks for a team like the Packers that feel like they are on the cusp of something special won't hurt them too badly long-term. However, for a team like the Jets, it could hinder the team's ability to pick up young players to replace aging or poorly performing players. Do I think Micah Parsons is a future DPOY? Yes. Do I wish the Jets got him? Yes. Yet, this isn't a move the Jets are ready to make. Moving a former third overall selection, who's now a cornerstone franchise player like Quinnen Williams, is a bad move for the locker room and could come back to haunt the franchise. It was a fun moment in time to think Parsons could've been a Jet, but the team needs many more upgrades at different positions.
