James Gunn Announces “Man Of Tomorrow”

DC

Last week, co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, officially announced the newest installment of DC's Universe: "Man Of Tomorrow". The movie will follow the events of "Superman" and "Peacemaker: Season Two," and directly involve David Cornswet's "Superman" and Nicholas Hoult's "Lex Luthor." The film will also see the return of Rachel Brosnan's "Lois Lane" and the Justice Gang (Isabela Merced's "Hawkgirl", Nathan Fillion's "Green Lantern Guy Gardner", and Edi Gathegi "Mr. Terrific"). The release date is set for July 9, 2027, and production is scheduled to begin in early 2026 with a rumored date in April. James Gunn will direct and has already written the script, with rewrites already underway.

James Gunn has confirmed that this movie will not serve as a direct sequel or be "Superman 2," but it will tell a story about two of comic books' fiercest rivals working together: Superman and Lex Luthor. "It's a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat," Gunn said on The Howard Stern Show. This news has sent DC fans into a frenzy, as a potential big-time Superman villain's debut could be on the way, with many speculating it could be Brainiac, who has never been adapted for the big screen. The closest we've been to seeing Brainiac is on the "Krypton" show that aired in 2018, which was centered around Superman's grandfather, "Seg-El", CW's "Smallville" and "Superman & Lois". A story centered on the unlikely partnership between Superman and Lex Luthor against Brainiac could be a box office success. It could also establish long-term storylines where Lex Luthor leverages his fame from stopping Brainiac to redeem his public image and capitalize on that momentum to run for President, setting up another film where Superman attempts to stop Lex Luthor as a corrupt politician.

With Marvel still figuring out what's next, following the ongoing production of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, this could be a chance for DC to capitalize on the momentum Superman 2025 has given them. DC has two films and one show slated for 2026, with Supergirl scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026 starring Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Clayface scheduled to release on September 11, 2026 starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen/Clayface, and Lanterns releasing on HBO Max as a TV show starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. DC also has "Batman: Part II" scheduled as an Elseworlds film, starring Robert Pattinson as Batman, releasing on October 1, 2027. Many scripts are rumored to be in progress for Wonder Woman and Dynamic Duo (a story about Nightwing and Red Hood). A lot of hype is coming from DC Studios, and it could pay off grandly if all films are good and perform well at the box office.
